Development of a lithium battery value chain in Mexico
Lithium is a key element for the energy transition, particularly due to its role in the production of lithium-ion batteries, which are essential for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage. Mexico has high potential, with approximately 1.7 million tons, placing it among the top 20 countries with the largest reserves.
The development of a lithium value chain in Mexico can generate economic, environmental, and employment benefits, including thousands of direct and indirect jobs, GDP growth, and industrial strengthening. The global battery market is projected to grow by more than 20% annually through 2030.
However, international competition is intense, so Mexico must act quickly to position itself. This involves exploring and refining its resources, fostering international collaboration, and strengthening local capacities through education, innovation, and effective public policies.
This document presents an initial assessment of the current situation, opportunities, challenges, and proposals for developing a lithium battery value chain in Mexico.
