Subdirectorate of Energy and Climate Change Research – Leading Knowledge for the Energy Transition

    1. Background

    The Institute for Development, Energy, and Environment (IDEA) is a think tank created to address the climate emergency through comprehensive and viable solutions to transform the energy sector in Mexico and the region. Through rigorous technical analysis, the development of innovative strategies, and the generation of accessible knowledge, IDEA promotes the transition toward a sustainable, equitable, and emissions-free energy model. IDEA is structured into various strategic areas that integrate advanced research, policymaking, and innovative proposals in the areas of energy and the environment, working decisively to influence decision-making in the public, private, and social sectors.

    IDEA is comprised of a multidisciplinary team of specialized professionals who ensure the quality of each product and foster innovation and continuous improvement. Particularly in the areas of technical research and project analysis, strong analytical skills, knowledge of economics, finance, modeling, project structuring, and evaluation of measures for decarbonization and sustainable development are required.

    In this regard, a person is required to fill the position of Research Deputy Director with a high academic standing and extensive experience in research and technical analysis in areas related to energy and economics, in order to contribute decisively to the fulfillment of IDEA's strategic objectives.

    2. Job description

              a. General objective

    The person occupying the Research Subdirectorate position will be responsible for supervising, coordinating, and strengthening the technical and strategic aspects of the projects developed at IDEA, collaborating closely with the General Directorate to ensure consistency, quality, and innovation in the organization's activities.

             b. Specific objectives

    1. IDEA Strategic Planning and Objective Monitoring: Support the Executive Directorate in developing and monitoring the institution's annual work plan, establishing measurable strategies and objectives.
    2. Coordinate the technical execution of the areas and projects: Oversee the implementation of research and project methodologies, ensuring that quality standards are met and that strategic guidelines and institutional objectives are respected.
    • Innovation and development: Promote the use of innovative methodologies that enhance research and knowledge generation.
    • External linking: Act as a technical liaison with partners, donors, and other institutions, facilitating information exchange and collaboration on joint initiatives.
      1. Training and internal management: Promote the development and strengthening of technical teams, ensuring a collaborative and results-oriented work environment.

                  c. Tasks and responsibilities

        • Supervision and coordination:
          • Oversee the implementation of technical projects, verifying the quality and relevance of the activities carried out.
          • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams, ensuring the integration of research, analysis, and management areas.
        • Strategic planning:
          • Collaborate with the General Management in defining and updating strategic and research plans.
          • Establish project monitoring and evaluation indicators.
        • Proposal development:
          • Develop and propose innovative initiatives aligned with institutional objectives.
          • Actively participate in the drafting and presentation of funding proposals to national and international organizations.
        • Linking and communication:
          • Serve as a technical bridge between IDEA and its strategic allies, donors, and other relevant stakeholders.
          • Represent the organization at events, forums, and technical meetings.
        • Information management:
          • Prepare periodic reports on the progress of research and technical analysis of projects, analysis of results, and proposals for improvement.
          • Document good practices and lessons learned in the performance of their duties.

                    d. Products to be delivered and their structure

    The person in the Research Assistant Director position will be responsible for the development and delivery of various products, which may include, but are not limited to:

    • Technical and informative documents.
    • Reports and analytical articles.
    • Executive presentations and reports.
    • Press releases, infographics, news releases, and promotional materials.

                      e. Contracting period and work schedule1

    • 1 Established times are subject to change

    (The scope and format of each product will be defined according to the needs of each project.)

    Initially, a 3-month contract is proposed, with the possibility of renewal based on the achievement of objectives and periodic evaluations for a period of 1 year.

    3. Desirable experience

                a. The person's work experience

    • Have a doctorado in areas related to energy, economics, climate change, engineering, sustainable development or related fields.
    • 15 years of proven experience in non-profit organizations, think tanks, or research institutions, documenting extensive knowledge of the energy and climate change sector
    • 10 years of experience in coordinating multidisciplinary projects scientific research in areas related to energy, environment, development or innovation.
    • 5 years of experience in project management and monitoring, preferably in contexts of national or international cooperation.
    • Required knowledge
    • Advanced mastery of methodologies qualitative and quantitative research.
    • Deep knowledge in project management,
    • Knowledge of environmental (technical) and economic modeling, financial analysis, and structuring of technical initiatives.
    • Advanced handling of specialized tools and software for data analysis and reporting.
    • Knowledge of regulations and regulatory frameworks related to energy, economics, climate change, finance, among others.
    • Experience in developing energy planning and climate action instruments.
    • Experience in analyzing issues related to energy and climate change; decarbonization pathways for energy sectors (electricity, oil and gas, transportation, industry, energy efficiency), and energy transition.
    • Languages ​​and other skills
    • Spanish: Advanced proficiency, both written and oral.
    • English: Advanced level, for reading, writing and presenting specialized technical documents.
    • Interpersonal and leadership skills, with a demonstrated ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and collaborative environments.
    • High analytical skills, critical thinking, and an orientation toward innovation and complex problem-solving.
